The Hidden World of Estrangement: Understanding and Addressing the Complex Issue
Estrangement is characterized as being physically or emotionally distanced from one or more family members or significant relationships. It is a complex and emotionally charged issue that affects millions of people around the world. Estrangement is far more common than many people realize. According to some estimates, up to 10% of families experience some form of estrangement. Although it’s a common issue, estrangement is often kept hidden and shrouded in shame. When important relationships break apart, it’s often seen as a personal failure or a source of embarrassment.
Author Kylie Agllias highlights in her book “Family Estrangement: A Matter of Perspective” that estrangement is often misunderstood and stigmatized, and many mental health professionals lack the training or resources to support those struggling with this complex issue. Understanding the various factors that contribute to estrangement, such as societal and cultural factors, family dynamics, and individual personality traits, can help families and mental health professionals provide more effective guidance and support.
Agllias emphasizes that estrangement can be both a process and a result, a journey and a destination. It’s an emotionally charged issue that can be caused by a variety of factors, including addiction, mental illness, financial stress, long-standing conflicts, misunderstandings, unresolved trauma, abuse, or neglect.
However, despite its prevalence, mental health professionals often overlook or minimize estrangement. As a result, those who are estranged may feel isolated, misunderstood, and unsupported. A study published in the Journal of Family Issues found that adult children who had experienced parental estrangement reported higher levels of depression, anxiety, and loneliness.
Many people who have experienced estrangement, myself included, understand the difficulties and complexities that come with this issue. It can be a painful and isolating experience, and often it’s met with stigma and misunderstanding. That’s why it’s important to raise awareness and provide support for those who are struggling with estrangement. By sharing our stories and supporting each other, we can create a community that promotes healing, understanding, and acceptance.
Kinships is a platform that aims to create a safe and inclusive space for those who are dealing with estrangement.
